Penguin tennis wins

Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team defeated IPFW 4-3 on Sunday.

Rodrigo Campos won the clinching match for the Penguins.

With YSU leading 3-2, Campos dispatched of IPFW’s Jonathan Rea 6-4, 6-4 to give YSU its fourth point of the dual.

YSU (3-3) came out strong winning two of three doubles points to grab a 1-0 lead over the Mastodons.

Campos beat Rea clinched the match for the Penguins, their third-straight win.

Also, for the second time in four matches, freshman Annina Brendel won the deciding match as the Youngstown State women’s tennis team beat IPFW 4-3.

YSU has won five straight duals and improves to 5-2.

Swisher back with Indians after funeral

GOODYEAR, Ariz.

Nick Swisher has returned to his first spring training with the Cleveland Indians after attending his mother’s funeral in Ohio.

Swisher said Sunday that it was comforting to be back around his teammates. He had left the club on Thursday following the death of his mother, Lillian Marie Malizia, who died in Columbus, Ohio from leukemia. She was 63.

Swisher was in good spirits as he resumed baseball activities with the Indians, who signed him to a $56 million, four-year contract. The 32-year-old Swisher batted .272 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs for the Yankees last season.

Galaxy says Landon Donovan to rejoin team

CARSON, Calif.

The Los Angeles Galaxy say Landon Donovan will rejoin the team during the final week of March after a break of almost four months.

The 30-year-old midfielder and forward, a veteran of three World Cups with the United States, had said last fall he was uncertain whether he wanted to continue playing.

Donovan has a team-record 92 goals during eight seasons with the Galaxy, who have won the last two Major League Soccer titles. He has a record 49 goals in 144 appearances for the USA.

Franklin Arena Grand Prix with 2 more wins

ORLANDO, Fla.

Missy Franklin made it four swimming wins in three nights with a triumphant final day at the Arena Grand Prix.

The four-time gold medalist at last year’s London Olympic Games won the 200-meter backstroke in 2 minutes, 8.47 seconds and added the 100-free title by beating fellow Olympian Christine Magnuson 55.37 to 55.99.

Other Olympians also won, with Ryan Lochte capturing the 200 individual medley and Tyler Clary taking the 200 backstroke.

FIFA announces soccer prize money

ZURICH

FIFA will pay $4.1 million in prize money to the Confederations Cup winner.

FIFA says $20 million in total prize money will be shared among eight teams playing in the World Cup warm-up event in Brazil from June 15-30. The prize fund was $17.6 million at the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Elghayoor takes the Dearly Precious Stakes

NEW YORK

Elghayoor won for the first time, holding off stablemate Railtown Girl by a half-length on Sunday in the $75,000 Dearly Precious Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

After twice finishing second in maiden races, Elghayoor smoothly handled the step up to a stakes with Eddie Castro aboard. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin enjoyed a 1-2 finish. His fillies were uncoupled in the betting. The time was 1:13.17 for the six furlongs.
