GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tournament Division I

Boardman 52, Fitch 42

AKRON

Emily Gibbs scored 16 points and Boardman (10-13) jumped out to a 17-8 first-quarter lead en route to the victory in a sectional semifinal at Ellet High School. Kelly Tomcsanyi scored 15 and Megan Volosin had 13. For Fitch (17-6), Cassie Custer scored 14 and Megan Sefcik scored 11.

Twinsburg 79, East 28

Ashley Morisette scored 17 points to lead Twinsburg (23-0), which has won back-to-back state titles. Ashlyn Baker scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Panthers (6-13).

Regular season

Green 50, Ursuline 34

GREEN TOWNSHIP

Liz Jiles led a balanced attack with 12 points and Julia Guyton added nine for the Bulldogs (12-10) and Green held Ursuline to just two fourth-quarter points. Tanaya Beacham led all scorers with 19 points for the Irish (8-14) and Sydney Beasley had 11.

DIVISION III WRESTLING

ROOTSTOWN

Jackson-Milton’s Mitch Tikkanen (106 pounds) and Devin Seka (120) earned runner-up finishes to help the Bluejays place an area-best third at the Rootstown sectional. Rootstown and Manchester finished 1-2. Girard’s Zane Chase (120 pounds) and James Cupan (160) each earned individual titles — the only Valley wrestlers to do so — as the Indians placed fourth. Teammate Garrett Bass was runner-up at 138 pounds. Other area wrestlers who placed second were South Range’s Anthony Renforth (126), Liberty’s Brandon Jefferson (145) and Tyrell Johnson (152), Crestview’s Matt Hardenbrook (170) and Dimitri Gregory (195), Brookfield’s David Jamieson (220) and United’s Charlie Smith (285). The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next week’s district meet.

BOYS BASKETBALL Regular season

Minerva 63, United 42

MINERVA

Jordan Locke scored 15 points and Nick Clapper and Bill Eyer each had 12 to lead the Lions (3-15). Caleb Berdine scored 12 points and Caleb Conser had 10 for the visiting Golden Eagles (2-19).
