The YMCA of Youngstown is seeking people interested in the Y’s Lifeguard Training and Certification classes. They can register between Feb. 26 and March 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. The program is open to all people 16 and older. The fee is $175 if registered before Sunday and $200 after that date. The Y’s lifeguard training and certification program equips candidates with all necessary skills from first aid and CPR to leadership and teamwork.
Candidates must pass a physical competency test consisting of swimming 300 yards, treading water for 2 minutes using legs only, feet-first surface dive to 10 feet and swimming under-water for 15 feet.
The Mahoning River Corridor People’s Garden Program, funded by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, provides grants for the establishment of gardens to serve as community educational resources to residents of Mahoning River Corridor communities. Groups located within Lowellville, Struthers, Campbell, Youngstown, Girard, McDonald, Niles, Warren and Newton Falls are eligible to apply.
All projects must be new garden spaces, and can be vegetable gardens, recreational gardens, or wildlife gardens.
Approximately 12 grants will be awarded this year. Projects will be chosen based on innovative design, community impact, project sustainability and the project’s potential for community environmental education.
A representative of a group applying for a grant must attend a training workshop. Times and locations are: Saturday, 3:30 p.m., Youngstown- Mahoning Country Library, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown; Tuesday, 6 p.m., Newport Library, 3730 Market St., Youngstown; and Feb. 21, 6:30 p.m., TNP Office, 170 N. Park Ave., Warren.

The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership is seeking volunteers to help prepare income tax returns for people who can’t afford to pay to have their taxes processed through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, a program that helps people tax returns at no cost to the taxpayer.
Once volunteers complete an online IRS tax training, they can prepare basic taxes for Mahoning County residents who had a gross income of $51,000 or less in 2012.
Each volunteer may choose the days and times during February and March at the MYCAP office, 1325 Fifth Ave.

University of Akron enrolling nurses for fall
The University of Akron’s School of Nursing has begun enrolling students in fall 2013 courses for its new Doctor of Nursing Practice program.
The DNP, a clinical doctorate, differs from the traditional research-focused Ph.D. and recognizes advanced clinical practice similar to the clinical doctorates in other professional fields.
The UA School of Nursing is offering an information session about the DNP program on Monday at 7 p.m. in Room 305, Mary Gladwin Hall.
