Obama to stress jobs, Afghan war troop withdrawal

Published: Tue, February 12, 2013 @ 12:26 p.m.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Seeking to focus on nation-building at home, President Barack Obama will use his State of the Union address tonight to call for more spending on infrastructure and manufacturing, while also announcing the withdrawal of 34,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan within a year.

The highly anticipated announcement on the next phase of the troop withdrawal will cut the size of the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan in half by next February. The drawdown puts the U.S. on pace to formally finish the protracted war by the end of 2014.

A senior administration official confirmed the size of the troop drawdown on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the announcement ahead of the president.

While Obama is expected to focus the bulk of his prime-time address to a joint session of Congress on the economy and job creation, other foreign policy priorities interjected in the hours before his speech.

North Korea said it successfully detonated a nuclear device today in defiance of U.N. warnings, and the White House said Obama would make the case that the nuclear program had only further isolated the impoverished nation.

I hear this about Obama and spending a lot. What would you have him cut? Social Security and Medicare spending are set by law. Defense spending is almost untouchable. The service on the debt has to be paid. That leaves a little less than 20% of Federal spending as discretionary and that is the amount that pays for Federal law enforcement, the parks, education etc...

So, what should the president cut?

How about cutting off the welfare to non producers? If you are not disabled you better be working,. And if you claim to be disabled be able to prove. Get rid of the government trough, and you would see how fast these cheaters would get welll enough to earn a paycheck.. Also, I would think you could get rid of a % of all government workers and let them get a real job that produces something in the private sector, instead of pushing paper from one do nothing to another. Save the government jobs for x military, someone who actually sacrificed for this great country.

The best way to reduce wefare would be if "JOB MAKERS" stopped sending jobs overseas and make jobs here but then stockholders would make a few $ less One has to wonder if rep would have not tried to make President Obama a one term president (they really failed at that) and actually worked together for the country where we would be NOW
