Area churches plan services for Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13. This marks the beginning of Lent, a season of spiritual renewal.


Holy Apostles Parish, Noon prayer service with ashes at St. Stephen of Hungary, 854 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, and Mass with ashes at 5:30 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown.

Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, 291 Scoville Drive, Vienna: Blessing of ashes and distribution before Masses at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Stations of the Cross will be at 7 p.m. Fridays during Lent.

St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman: Masses at 7 and 8:30 a.m., 12:10 and 7 p.m.

St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown: Masses at 7 and 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Liturgy of the Word with ashes at noon.

St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., Youngstown: Masses at 7:45 a.m., 12:10 and 5:30 p.m. with distribution of ashes.

St. Dominic Church, 76 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown: Masses at 6:30 and 8 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m.

St. Michael Church, 300 N. Broad St., Canfield: Mass at 9 a.m. with ashes, Liturgy of the Word with ashes at 12:15, 5:30 and 7 p.m.

St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown: Masses at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard: Masses with distribution of ashes at 7 and 8:30 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. and word service with distribution of ashes at 4 p.m.


Faith Community Covenant Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown: Service at 7 p.m. with songs, Scripture readings, a message and impostion of ashes.


First Christian Church of Girard, 140 E. Broadway Ave., Girard: Beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing on Wednesdays throughout Lent, the church will be open from noon to 1 p.m. for quiet reflection, silent Scripture reading, prayer and self-serving communion.

Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman: A prayer vigil is planned from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ash Wednesday. Members are asked to sign up for half-hour to hour slots; members will pray at their homes or at the church.


Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE, Warren: Service at 10 a.m. in the chapel and 7 p.m. in church.

St. Augustine Episcopal Church, 614 Parmalee Ave., Youngstown: Service at 5:30 p.m. with distribution of ashes and Eucharist.

St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., Boardman: Liturgy at 7 p.m.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown: Liturgy with ashes at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.


Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman: Services at noon and 6:30 p.m.

Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman: Services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown: Service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Lenten programs Wednesdays with 5:30 p.m. supper and service at 6:30.

Historic Lutheran Church of St. John, 1429 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown: Chapel Eucharist with ashes at 12:05 and vespers with Great Sung Litany and ashes at 5 p.m.

Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 415 S. Main St., Columbiana: Service at 7 p.m.

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield: Services with Eucharist and imposition of ashes at noon and 7 p.m.

Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive, Youngstown: Worship with imposition of ashes at noon and 7 p.m. with soup lunch after the noon service.

New Life Lutheran Church, 1181 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty: Services at noon and 7:30 p.m. with Holy Communion.

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2985 Center Road, Poland: Imposition of ashes at noon with a spoken service and 7 p.m. with a full service. Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown: Divine Service with Holy Communion and imposition of ashes at 7 p.m.

St. John Lutheran Church, 14394 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, Petersburg: Service at 7:30 p.m. with soup and sandwich supper at 6.

Zion Lutheran Church, 10857 Main St., New Middletown: From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Rev. Larry Klinker will impose ashes in the worship room.


Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., Boardman: Worship and communion at 7 p.m. in the chapel with Chancel Choir.

Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St., Canfield: Worship service with meditation and choir anthems at 7 p.m.

Trinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St., Youngs-town: At 8 a.m., the Rev. Jerry Krueger will be on the sidewalk by Trinity to distribute ashes to those going to work. Ashes will be available in the Chapel of the Friendly Bells during lunch time. Service at 6 p.m. with imposition of ashes.


Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., Canfield: Joint service with area Presbyterian churches at 7 p.m. with community of singers.

Centenary United Methodist Church, 40 S. Market St., East Palestine: Service at 7 p.m.

Ellsworth Presbyterian Church, 11171 Akron-Canfield Road, Ellsworth: Service including communion and ashes at 7 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown: Vesper service with ashes at 7 p.m. in Helen Chapel preceded by board of deacons’ covered dish dinner at 6 with participation by Butler Memorial and Hungarian Presbyterian churches.

First Presbyterian Church, 3654 Main St., Mineral Ridge: A fish dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a service at 7 in the sanctuary. It will include the celebration of the Lord’s Supper and the imposition of ashes.

First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard, 22 Westview Ave., Hubbard: Service at 7 p.m. with communion and ashes.
