1693: A charter is granted for the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg in the Virginia Colony.

1910: The Boy Scouts of America is incorporated.

1922: President Warren G. Harding has a radio installed in the White House.

1963: Members of the Baath Socialist Party overthrow Iraqi Prime Minister Abdel-Karim Kassem, who is executed the next day.

1968: Three college students are killed in a confrontation with highway patrolmen in Orangeburg, S.C., during a civil rights protest against a whites-only bowling alley.

1971: NASDAQ, the world’s first electronic stock exchange, holds its first trading day.

1973: Senate leaders name seven members of a select committee to investigate the Watergate scandal, including its chairman, Sen. Sam J. Ervin, D-N.C.

1988: Mahoning Valley Steel Management Inc., a group of former and current managers at LTV’s Warren Works, makes a preliminary proposal to purchase the facility for between $100- and $200 million.

Retail windows at seven Youngstown area post offices will close one day a week as part of a nationwide cutback in postal service mandated by monetary constraints.

Hubbard city police officers and service workers will receive pay increases of 2 Ω percent because City Council failed to report to the state on the correct form its rejection of a fact finder’s recommendation.

1973: Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co., which makes pipe for oil and gas drilling, is drilling for natural gas in Poland Township in an effort to ease its own gas shortages.

George J. Mihalcik, 27, The Vindicator’s Sharon Bureau manager and active in community theater in the Shenango Valley and Youngstown, dies of complications in Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital in Farrell after a brief illness.

The Rev. John Ryan, assistant pastor of Christ Our King Church in Warren, is named alcoholism coordinator for the Youngstown Board of Health at an annual salary of $10,500.

1963: An unexpected shift of an arctic air mass southward brings frigid air into Youngstown, establishing a new record of -6 at the Youngstown Municipal Airport.

The State Highway Patrol announces a crackdown of drivers who operate cars and trucks with dirty windshields, saying they will be pulled over and asked to correct the situation before proceeding.

Anthony Flask pulls out of the Youngstown mayoral race and will run again for city council president.

1938: U.S. Sen. H. Styles Bridges, former governor of New Hampshire, who is in Youngstown to speak to the Mahoning Valley Foremen’s Club at Stambaugh Auditorium, says public opinion is swinging against President Franklin Roosevelt and will make it a hard battle if he decides to run for a third term.

Youngstown Mayor Lionel Evans vetoes an ordinance to regulate pinball machines in the city and create a marble board inspector saying the city lacks money to pay a new employee.

Youngstown City Council amends a proposal to halt beer and liquor sales in the city at midnight Saturday to allow continuing sales until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Sales would be banned for the rest of the day.
