Champion man dies in Braceville traffic accident

BRACEVILLE — Dennis R. Baker, 23, of Champion died in a crash at 6:48 a.m. today on state Route 5 just east of the Ohio Turnpike after hitting the back of a dump truck.

Baker was eastbound on Route 5 in a 2010 Chevolet Malibu and hit the back of the truck as the truck slowed for a LaBrae school bus that had stopped to pick up students, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The air bag on Baker’s car deployed, but Baker was not wearing a seat belt. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The driver of the dump truck, Stephen J. Cary, 22, of Canfield, was not injured. The owner of the truck he was driving is Three Express Incorporated of North Lima.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

Three Marine Corp. recruits died and several other people were injured in an accident March 31, 2010, a short distance east of today’s crash when a tractor-trailer hit the back of the car as it waited at a red light at state Route 5 and Burnett Street.
