YSU football adds 22 players, loses four

Published: Wed, February 6, 2013 @ 3:59 p.m.

The Youngstown State football team added 16 recruits at Wednesday's national signing day to go with six players who enrolled last month.

Two of the recruits were local players: Brookfield senior Ryan Mosora and Poland senior kicker Connor McFadden. YSU has six recruits from Ohio.

Also, YSU coach Eric Wolford announced that quarterback Patrick Angle, who has backed up Kurt Hess the past two years has decided to transfer. Angle is one of four players who have left the team since the fall, joining DTs Austin Trgovcich (Cardinal Mooney) and Anthony Szymczak (both freshmen last fall) and junior safety Chris Charles (who was a junior).

Coach Wolford would do well to review Jim Tressel's recruiting in the "state of Youngstown". That 75 mile radius where fans know the players and the families and friends show up with their butts in Stambaugh stadium. Maybe then "actual" crowds will be closer to "announced" crowds. But, to have only two local recruits sucks, especially when McFadden is an obvious default choice.

Neither one of you clowns knows what you're talking about. Talent in the area was way down this year and there were several players above the YSU level, but very few within the YSU level. The coaches are always cognizant of area talent and recruit accordingly.

I agree with the first two posters, talent may have been down this year but this guy is always trying to get kids from outside the area. Tressel had it figured out, the current coach doesn't have a clue and and he can't motivate kids for more than a week or two. Last years record is a prime example of what I'm talking about.

Fact is the talent here isn't that good at this level any more. Recently, local recruits leave YSU because they are not good enough for this level. The running back Jones from Ursline, Conlan and now Trgovich to name a few. If it was legit talent it would be recruited. Where have any of YSU level players from the area gone that have excelled?

the question is, will wofford know what to do with the talent coming in? what happened last year amounted to wofford throwing up all over himself.

That is an excellent point. Where have the players from the area gone after leaving YSU? The talent level in the midwest has been down the last few years. Gotta leave the area to recruit. I guess the question is who should they have recruited? I'm all ears.

For YSU to have a great recruiting class they need to steal MAC kids. As u see not to many kids signed with MAC schools.
A kid that is able to go to a BCS school is NOT going to choose YSU and a Division 2 kid will get u beat at the level YSU plays!!!!!

We are spoiled in this area with High School football. What many us believe to be a down year is still a good year for most other schools and areas outside of NE Ohio. I mentioned this in another thread: You are not gonna get the great players, but you got a shot at the good ones, and the good ones would be considered great in the places that Wofford is currently recruiting.

Not going to argue with any of the points you have made, all true.Biggest issue I have is the big deal Wolford and Media made when he was hired about how he "would own the area", hasnt owned anything. He signed all those local guys his first year, "jones" was his poster child, where are they know. Get tired of all his talk.

you live in the area, you love the area but the talent level is down, way down and it has been that way for a while. Things go in cycles. Its no different in the ytown area. You have a far less talent pool. Facts are facts you just choose not to face reality. Ytown area talent is down and its been down. face the facts. it is what it is. if i was the coach I wouldnt recruit the area just to say i have area players. you win with talent. you recruit talent. where ever it is. Go get it.
