Tanker overturns on state Route 5, spilling diesel fuel into nearby stream
A semi tanker traveling westbound from Trumbull County rolled over on state Route 5 about 6 a.m. today, causing its cargo of 7,800 gallons of diesel fuel to begin leaking into a nearby stream.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the tanker rolled over after overturning a curve.
The tanker driver whose name was not released was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The Ravenna Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is at the scene . Other agencies assisting in the cleanup include the Portage County Emergency Management Agency, Ravenna Township Fire Department, Portage County Homeland Security, Portage County Sheriff’s Department, and Ohio Department of Transportation It is unknown exactly how much of the fuel has leaked from the tanker.
State routes 5 and 59 are closed in this area, with ODOT handling the detour. Motorist are advised to avoid this area. It is unknown when the road will be reopened.
There have been no evacuations.
