Let me get it out of the way. They are good people, do not know why anyone would want to hurt them. Blah, blah, blah. Same old story, government housing, welfare babies and free medical care. Why would anyone want to change their life style? I remember when we called them projects, now it is a village. How quaint!! The good people there do not have a chance to survive.

Who are we to judge how people want to live or die?

nonchalant!! When it takes away my rights of freedom because I have to avoid areas where violence is a way of life and it might bring harm to my family and loved ones. I went to East High in the late 60's and lived near that area. These people have taken away my consititutional rights to move freely in this country because of fear of being harmed for no good reason, except for "yo was in my turf". Yes, we who abide by the laws of the land do have the right to judge!!!! Thank God, that's all we law abiding people can do.

Graduated from THe Rayen High School and come home often my family is still there. Now I live in Chicago. However with that being said, The YOU People remarks, The Freebie and Welfare REMARKS, Goverment Housing Welfare Babies, YOU PEOPLE, and I am saying YOU PEOPLE are slithering snakes of RACISM. It's more of YOU PEOPLE on Welfare than us. I am not going to hide my hand and give a fake name. I am going to say what I mean and I mean what I say. Shame on you. 123goz said "1 so far, not exactly 'little Chicago' are we?"

Don't be putting down our thugs, they are just slow starters in the cold weather. They will pick up the pace when the weather warms up!

By the way, Chicago population is around 2.7 million and Ytown is around 65,000 or 2.4% of the Chigago population. 42 murders so far this year in Chicago, 2.4% of 42 is 1.008! I would say that Ytown is holding it's own. Percentage wise we are ahead of New York City so show some respect!

Isn't this fun!!!

Necie Neal, Some people have never left the plantation, just called public housing now. And instead of masters owning these people, the government does now.
Busyman, my feelings exactly. My rights to roam safely in this city and many others have been taken away.

Hey what is all the fuss about. Read the other artilce about the white trash mother that let her boy friend sexually abuse and kill her son. This is an equal opportunity blog.

Other Stats:
85 % of the US prison pop is Black.
82 % of Black Woman have a child out of wedlock. Shall we look up the drop out rate from highschool among black youth. Yes we know on the whole there are more whites on welfare than blacks, but you must look at the percentage of the ethnic group by numbers.

How they live and die why should we care. How they live they take hand outs that you the taxpayer pay for. And when they die who pays to bury them. I'm talking about those people who live off the govt. And not talking about the color of their skin.

Let's revisit the age old question of what came first. The chicken or the egg? Here we can simplify the thought process by seeing that people packed into the projects caused problems. Life is uncomplicated when you own a ranch home in the burbs, have a job and drive a new car. Race is not the problem but the forced living conditions are.

Is Rockford Village a "project" in the traditional sense of the word?

It looks nice. I know there is a community center. Is it just apartments with lower rent?

Poindexter Village, Ohio's first Public Housing Community was dedicated in Columbus in 1940 by FDR in person..All nationalities and races represented.. By the sixties, it became predominately black, coincedentally with segregation and LBJ"S GREAT SOCIETY... Just 2 questions...
1. How did it get this way?
2. What is the answer to the problem moving forward?

Fact:
30% of welfare recipients leave welfare permanently in less than two years
50% of welfare recipients leave welfare permanently in less than four years
15% on welfare recipients stay on welfare continuously for five years or longer

Fact:
Research has shown that only 1 in 4 of the daughters of welfare mothers will themselves become recipients.

Fact:
Women on welfare do work but typically receive a minimum wage. Statistics show that mothers on welfare held on average 1.7 jobs while almost half (44%) held two or more jobs. The women spent an average of four months looking for a job and worked on average 34 hours per week. This is about the same as non-welfare mothers.

Fact: In 1970, the average welfare payment per month for a family was $676 (in 1993 dollars). In 1993, this amount had decreased to $373. This is almost a 50% cut.

Fact: Teen mothers in general do not have children because they aspire to be welfare moms. 75% of females who had sex before age 14 had so involuntarily. 61% of teenage mothers had been sexually abused starting on average at age 11. 68% of mothers between ages 12 and 17 said they had been sexually abused.

Fact: Less than 1% of all federal spending was used for the welfare programs, a total of 12.2 billion in 1993, which was before the 1996 welfare reform reductions. Aid to families having dependent children cost the US (including both federal and states) 22.3 billion and consumed about 0.35% of the GDP (gross domestic product). For the math challenged among us, that is not 35%. It is about 1/3 of 1%.

"Life is uncomplicated when you own a ranch home in the burbs, have a job and drive a new car. Race is not the problem but the forced living conditions are."

So who's fault is that someone wanting a better life? "Everybody" has a chance to succeed in life if there willing to put a effort into it. There are numerous opportunities to succeed in life, but you have to want to strive for a better life, instead of relying on the government handouts as a way of life. So tired of all the ""excuses"" people throw out, when all they have to do is look in the mirror and want a better life for themselves and there children. The majority of America can do it. But it starts with the individual and what they want in life. No more no less.

L2S ..... you seem to miss the point that without the chicken you will have no eggs. Without jobs you will not get a better life. Government can keep you in squalor or take you out of it. Private enterprise is not interested in taking people out of the projects nor is government at this time.

17borylie(790 comments)posted 1 year, 7 months ago

Fred, Government can't take you out of squalor, they're left to need government. People that need government and believe that government is there to help are being kept down on purpose. They are nothing more than a vote. You think it's people like me that hold blacks back. Sincerely Fred I'd love to see all that want a better life, had one. It's not me, it's whoever that's telling you it's my fault, that is your enemy. Private enterprise is very interested in hiring blacks or anybody that wants to work. They would much rather hire a black American, than a illegal or non citizen.

Fred

Excuses. Nothing but excuses, over and over again. Blame the government, blame the private sector, blame whoever, but never blame the individual. There are jobs, there are plenty of jobs, but you have to have the ambition to want to go to work and get off of government assistance. Drug dealing has the flashy life style and huge money, but where does that lead you? Six feet under. Government assistance was meant to help out those in need, not make it a life style. And it is a lifestyle to people because they rather sit at home and collect money instead of getting up and going to work.
Quit putting the blame on everyone. It's always someone else's fault. huh?

As a professional that has lived in a few larger metropolitan areas I have seen a wide range of clients from various racial, social ecomonic, and religious backgrounds. I think it's largely unfair to assume anyone here was of a certain race. While there may be a large percentage of minorities in the "hood" where we live there is also a strong caucasian(and other) population with the same entitlement mindset. Many of you here on vindy have never got out of the area. If you actually get out of the depressed area of Youngstown you can go to cities that are thriving with educated blacks and other minorities that do not live by this ridiculous ghetto mindset. Bottom line is, once you get away from the depressed midwest, you can remove alot of the negative racial assumptions, and just leave it to there is a large mixed population of people that have no respect for authority, have entitlement issues, and lack of worth ethic. I just hate it all boils down to race here because you shouldn't lump one population to the whole. I don't know about you, but my mama taught me to treat people with respect and not make assumptions of a whole based on a select group of idiots. Just saying..Not all minorities are uneducated, entitlement happy folks. And if you ever have the pleasure of going to Jobs and Family Services there is alot of white people there too. How about we just meet people and decice how we feel about them individually based on how they treat us

I've been literally around the world and back, it's the same everywhere, so it's not just Youngstown. So tired of hearing that. Wish people would quit with that old excuse.

""Bottom line is, once you get away from the depressed midwest, you can remove alot of the negative racial assumptions, and just leave it to there is a large mixed population of people that have no respect for authority, have entitlement issues, and lack of worth ethic."""

See above

"" I don't know about you, but my mama taught me to treat people with respect and not make assumptions of a whole based on a select group of idiots. Just saying..Not all minorities are uneducated, entitlement happy folks.""

Who said that? And I was always taught, you treat people how you want to be treated. And some of these people in society just hate all the time. No matter how you treat them.

It's not a matter of race, it's a matter of wanting to do something in your life. White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Green, etc. It's all about the individual succeeding and becoming a productive member of society. .

Are people content living on government handouts?

A Youngstown man with a violent past was arrested for the city’s first murder of the year.

Larry Blue, 32, formerly of Parmalee Avenue, was charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault after he was arrested Saturday by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force Saturday at a Tyrell Avenue apartment.
A woman, Khadijah Nicole Payden Briggs, 19, of Maplewood Court, was charged with complicity to aggravated robbery.

Blue, according to court records, was sentenced to two years in prison for complicity to felonious assault and two more years in 2007 for attempted felonious assault, having weapons as a felon and improperly handling a gun in a vehicle.

Blue going to be Blue when the useless DNA goes back to prison.

Hi Education Voter!

I really enjoyed your post, and decided to check out your source link, because although it's nice to have a source I was having trouble with some of that facts and stats being thrown around. So when I checked your source's source, I found that the sources used for the paper above those facts where either entirely Nebraska related, or one with a broken link, so I wasn't able to verify the sources. Here, however is what I found.

First, while I highly commend you for using a source (and I'm being serious, it's amazing the people who don't), 1993 was 20 years ago, comparing stats to 20 years before that. That's a span of two to four decades old.

Second:

--Fact: Less than 1% of all federal spending was used for the welfare programs, a total of 12.2 billion in 1993, which was before the 1996 welfare reform reductions.--

I pulled up the US Federal Budget Spending, and found that in 1993, spending categorized as welfare actually accounted for $136.5B of $1,515.3B, which equates to 9%, not less than 1%.

Considering I can't seem to find data to validate your source's fact, I'm wary of the other facts listed below the paper that don't contain sources. I'm not saying their wrong. I'm saying they need a way to be validated or I can't hold them as fact.

My source is http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/f...

Who also pull their data from gpo.gov

From more recent data, you can see that spending on welfare has not quite doubled from 2006 to 2011 (which credit given that it did actually decrease from 2010 to 2011) in response to the economic crisis; what I'm interested in watching is whether or not it will continue to return to pre-crisis levels.
