Glenwood wrestlers place at invitational
The Glenwood wrestling team competed at the second annual Columbiana Clipper Challenge on Jan. 19 with several making the awards stand.
Finishing second in their respective weight classes were Matt Maroni, John Fleet and Richard Fischer. Jacob Mahood took fourth in his bracket.
BGMS boys beat Salem
Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys beat Salem 46-30 on Jan. 24.
Holden Lipke and Antonio Page led the way with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Brian Terlesky scored six points and Jimmy Lagese added three. The Spartans improved to 8-3 on the season.
The BGMS eighth-grade boys came back from eight points down to beat Salem, 35-29. The win improved the team’s record to 7-4.
Bryce Richey had a huge game, scoring more than half the team’s points with 18. JR Ryan, Mark Smaldino, and Sean Birchfield each had four points, Dante Colaluca had three big free throw makes to help seal the game.
Glenwood girls split with Quakers
The Glenwood eighth-grade girls improved to 7-3 on the year, beating Salem, 36-32.
Simone Comer had 12 for the Spartans and Lauren Pavlansky had 11. Aniyuh Spann added four and Taylor Halowell had seven. Charlotte Voytko had a strong defensive effort down the stretch. Alexis Stutz, Alaina Hufnagel, Faith Clear, and Kristen Bean added effort on the boards to help lead the Spartans in rebounding.
The seventh-grade girls lost to Salem, 21-12. Leading scorer was Ashley Clark with 10.
BGMS girls split against Warren Gold
The Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade girls basketball team improved to 6-3 on the year Jan. 17 by beating Warren, 34-17. Simone Comer led the way with a double-double, having 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Pavlansky had eight points, Aniyuh Spann and Alexis Stutz had 4 each. Charlotte Voytko and Alaina Hufnagel led the defense with two steals each and Kristen Bean pulled down two rebounds.
The seventh-grade girls lost a close one to Warren Gold, 21-18. Leading scorers were Ashley Clark with eight and Cassie Stitt with six.
Glenwood boys sweep Warren Gold
The BGMS eighth-grade boys basketball team improved to 6-4 with a 40-38 win at Warren on Jan. 17. BGMS was led in scoring by Bryce Richey with 17 points, including a big free throw in the final seconds. Also scoring for the Spartans were JR Ryan with seven, Sean Birchfield with six, and Gaven Strines with four.
The seventh-grade boys beat Warren, 48-37. Jarod Wilson led the way with 11 points, while Antonio Page and Holden Lipke scored eight and seven points, respectively. Also scoring were Noah Falleti with six, and Brian Terlesky and Billy Cammack with four.
Softball sign-ups set for Austintown league
Austintown girls softball league (slow-pitch) sign-ups, which are open to all Mahoning Valley girls, will be at the Austintown Township hall Feb. 2, 3, 16, and 17 from noon until 4 p.m.

It’s winter sports season, and it promises to be a great season filled with game-winning shots, wrestling tournaments, strikes and spares, gymastic routines and swim meets.
