Phantoms score late then fall in OT

JJ Piccinich’s goal with four seconds remaining in the third period forced overtime and earned the Youngstown Phantoms a point in the USHL’s Eastern Conference standings.

But the Tri-City Storm recovered, needing just 29 seconds of overtime to score the winning goal in Friday’s 6-5 game. Joel LEsperance scored the winner.

Piccinich scored twice. His first goal came on the power play late in the second period and gave the Phantoms (7-12-5, 19 points) a 4-3 lead. Maxim Letunov and Kyle Connor earned assists.

Goals by Christian Horn and Daniel Labosky put the Storm ahead, 5-4, midway through the third period.

Zach Evancho, Kiefer Sherwood and Luke Stork scored Youngstown’s other goals.

Colin DeAugustine made 23 saves for the Phantoms. For the Storm, Hayden Lavigne made 19 stops before being replaced by Jacob Johansson who stopped eight shots.

The Phantoms will play the Storm (7-16-2, 16 points) again tonight at 8.
