Poland driver cited for DUI after incident on West Side

Published: Fri, December 13, 2013 @ 11:38 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — A 40-year-old Poland man, who is in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center, is charged with driving under the influence and failure to control after city police found his vehicle in the woods off the Oakwood Avenue ramp to Interstate 680 southbound at 11:49 p.m Thursday.

Police said they found Michael Niro lying across the front seat of his heavily damaged vehicle, smelling strongly of alcohol and moaning, but otherwise unresponsive.

A blood sample taken from Niro, who was on a ventilator at the hospital, was placed in the police evidence room refrigerator, but the police report did not state his blood-alcohol level.
