We played it again, Sam, to the tune of excellence.

It’s that time of year again, when the spirit of giving is at its best. And the BurgerGuyz are giving our 2013 Burger of the Year Award.

This year we had some really good burgers and one particularly great burger. That greatness is what separated Bogey’s Bar and Grill from the rest of the field.

International model, Playboy cover model and local TV and radio personality Lisa Neeld-Infante helped us present the Burger of the Year award to owner’s Bob DeVicchio and Carmen Lofaro.

Not only did they have a perfectly seasoned patty that melted in your mouth with each bite, but every burger Chef Melvin Mckee made was just as good as the others. Whether combined with some pulled pork, topped with French onion dip, slathered in nachos and cheese, or just sitting between a pretzel bun, it was as if he knew exactly how to pair the beef with whatever particular feature topping was used.

Chef Mel has been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years, and “winning the Burger of the Year award is awesome, and my greatest accomplishment. Everybody has a burger, and to be ranked first out of the 54 burgers reviewed in the area is a great achievement.”

He added, “What makes Bogey’s burgers so good is the special seasoning and the ground steak we use, which is one of the best cuts of beef you can get. If you use the best quality beef, you will get the best burger.”

Bogey’s has a regular eight burger menu, but Thursdays they add 11 more delicacies for Burger Night. The burgers all taste so good, it’s hard to pick just one.

I’ve tried a number of Bogey’s burgers, and thought the seasoning and beef was exceptional, and the beef really did just melt in your mouth. For each burger, the individual flavors were present in every bite, yet the overall taste was exceptional because Chef Melvin knew what flavors would go great together.

What made Bogey’s burgers great for JT? “Everything! We've had A LOT of burgers and a lot of excellent burgers, but these are absolutely the best. I think it all starts with a creative chef that takes pride in serving an awesome product. If you ever get a chance, try 'em!”

JT added that we use a score sheet for each eatery, and “We break our experience down into 9 separate Items. After we averaged our scores, Bogey's scored higher in every category. It wasn't just one thing that stood out, is was everything.”

Johnny said, “I voted Bogey’s the best because everything about that night was perfect to me. The burger, bun, fries, service and atmosphere was over the top. The friendly feeling during dinner, shown to us by the staff, just made the evening better. Bogey's, lets play it again.”

Eric summed up the evening, and the year, by saying, “From the time I walked in until the time I left, everything at Bogey’s did nothing but impress me. The variety of hamburgers to choose from, on a menu that in itself has plenty of other options, was mind-blowing. Each of the burgers we were given to try were delicious. The burger menu offered some very unique choices. A nice change from a lot of restaurants that stick to a standard burger formula. Of all the great places we visited this past year, Bogey’s absolutely stands out and is well deserving as our choice of Burger of the Year.”

Bogey’s recently opened a Banquet hall so you can have all your Burger Events in a larger, even more comfortable setting. Actually, they can accommodate any event with any number of items from their delicious food menu.

3 1/2 stars - Trax (Austintown), Golden Dawn (Youngstown) and JD’s Post House (Champion);

3 stars - Master’s Bar & Grill (Liberty), Quench Bar & Grill (Boardman), Icehouse Inn (Austintown).

We also would like to recognize some of our servers for their exceptional service this year: Rachel McKinney (Montana’s: by far, one of the most outgoing, friendly waitresses we’ve ever had); Kesha Rhodes (Bogey’s); Tessa VonMoos (Dine N Dash); Anna Booth (Golden Dawn); Gary Stephens (StoneYard), and Tiffany Tulipano (Trax).

The Burger Year in Review

We made our yearly visit to the National Hamburger Festival in Akron to help judge the best burger.

We helped judge the Dave Grohl Burger just in time for the ceremony for the upkeep of Dave Grohl Alley.

We also judged the Quaker Steak & Lube inaugural Burger Event, which sent the winner to the Pittsburgh Hamburg Festival.
