Man shot in chest on South Side

Staff report

Police are trying to figure out how a man was shot in the chest Monday evening on the South Side.

Officers were called to Akron Children’s Hospital Boardman Campus where Raymond Sykes, 24, was taken by ambulance with a gunshot wound to the chest just after 7 p.m.

A woman with Sykes who originally gave officers a false name said they were walking in the area of Lucius Avenue or Avondale Avenue when she heard two or three shots and Sykes told her he was wounded.

Police were not able to talk to Sykes because of his condition, said Chief of Detectives Capt. Brad Blackburn.

Shortly before Sykes was shot, police were sent to a home in the 600 block of Mabel Avenue for a report of gunfire and when they arrived they found a woman outside who said someone fired several shots at her home.

Police found five or six bullet holes in the home, reports said.

Blackburn said police are trying to figure out if both shootings are related.
