Fifth- and sixth-grade girls from St. Christine’s and St. Charles schools used their best basketball skills in a game Nov. 22.
The game was part of the St. Charles Turkey Shootout basketball tournament at St. Charles School in Boardman. The tournament is a fundraiser for the St. Charles Athletic club. The club provides funding for general facility upgrades at St. Charles School.
The tournament is very organized, said Amy Savich. Her daughter, Angelina, played on St. Christine’s team.
“It’s a good chance for our girls to play some teams they may not have played in our earlier season,” Savich said.
The St. Christine team, as part of the Youngstown diocese, typically plays other diocese schools, she said.
“So this gives us a chance to play public schools, give her a little more competition,” Savich said.
At the Nov. 22 game, St. Christine beat St. Charles 28-10.
Tournament games consisted of four six-minute quarters. The tournament was a two game pool play format with a single elimination tournament for boys and girls in fifth- and sixth-grade. Players on each team were from the same school district.
A concession stand was part of the event. Claire Driscoll, a student at St. Charles, volunteered to help. She used the event to earn volunteer hours needed to make her Confirmation. She’s also a basketball player for the school.
“I thought it would be fun to help out with the younger kids’ tournament,” she said.
