WARREN — The three men at the center of allegations that a funeral home in Niles and one in Girard stole money from scores of customers who paid for funeral services in advance were arraigned on charges this morning that could land each man in prison for 20 years.
Robert J. McClurkin, 49, of South State Street in Girard and Patrick J. McClurkin, 47, of Abbey Street in Girard; and Robert P. McDermott Sr., 51, of Lincoln Avenue in Niles each pleaded innocent in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
All three turned themselves in Monday morning, each was led away in handcuffs after the hearing, and each was ordered held in the Trumbull County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
The McClurkins, owners of the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard; and McDermott, owner of the Robert P. McDermott Memorial Home in Niles; are each charged with engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and theft from an elderly person.
Each is charged also with grand theft, theft, and violating the laws regarding prepaid funerals.
