Whip the dregs in public

Published: Sun, December 1, 2013 @ 12:00 a.m.

By Bertram de Souza (Contact)

No one (other than the morally deficient) who views the video recordings of the so-called Knockout Game can feel anything but pity for the victims, and disgust for the attackers.

The game is the latest manifestation of the urban decay evident in so many parts of the country. The vermin preying upon unsuspecting, defenseless people are no better than wild animals. They don’t belong in human society.

While there have been numerous reports of such crimes in the northeast part of the country and beyond, law enforcement is unwilling to label the activity a crime spree.

The men and women — young and old — who have been knocked out with just one punch would certainly have a different view.

According to the New York Times, which recently published a story under the headline, “Police Unsure if Random Attacks Are Rising Threat or Urban Myth,” a 78-year-old women in Brooklyn, N.Y., reported being punched in the head. Her assailant fled without touching her shopping bags or her pocketbook.

Punched in the face

In another incident reported by the Times, a 19-year-old Hasidic man said he had been approached by eight men and then punched in the face by one of them.

Police in Syracuse told the Times the city has seen two such attacks this year, each fatal. At least one of the assailants said he was playing the Knockout Game.

It is no game — certainly not to the victims who invariably are injured.

Thus the question: What should be done to put a stop to these senseless acts of violence?

The answer can be found in Singapore, the wealthy island nation in the Pacific that has earned a reputation as one of the cleanest, safest places on earth.

Their solution to anti-social behavior is simple: swift, harsh punishment.

Nineteen year ago, Americans found out just how strictly the code of conduct is enforced when 19-year-old Michael P. Fay of the Dayton, Ohio, area was whipped in Singapore for vandalism.

Fay received four strokes with a rattan cane that left three dark-brown scars on his right buttock and four lines each about half an inch wide on his left buttock, according to the New York Times.

Fay told the newspaper that the bleeding caused by the caning felt like a “bloody nose.”

After confessing to vandalism, Fay was sentenced to four months in jail and six strokes with a half-inch thick cane on two counts of vandalism and possession of stolen road signs. The sentence was later reduced to four strokes, the Times reported in June 1994.

The government of Singapore defended caning as a normal part of the country’s legal system. Indeed, in many parts of the world — and even at one time in this country — parents and guardians embraced the idea that without discipline children would grow up to be social misfits, at best, or criminals, at worst. So, punishment was commonplace.

But, today, any attempt to correct misbehavior by administering a few licks with a cane would immediately result in an investigation by social services.

The outcome of such hands-off upbringing is evident on the streets of America’s cities.

Children are growing up with no sense of right and wrong and, in too many cases, no adult supervision.

Lack of remorse

Thus, when you look at the videos of the Knockout Game, the most striking aspect of the attacks is the sheer lack of remorse or concern for the victim on the part of the thugs.

No amount of touchy-feely psychobabble can change the fact that there are human dregs roaming the streets of our cities.

What is to be done?

Jail or prison is certainly not a deterrent, given that oftentimes these individuals are inducted into gangs while behind bars. Having a criminal record has become a badge of honor.

The punishment, therefore, must include a public aspect.

The assailants should be caned in central square. It isn’t the sting of the rod striking exposed flesh that would cause the most pain; it’s the public humiliation.

After all, that’s what the victims of the Knockout Game feel — in addition to the suffering caused by their physical wounds.

This is clearly a case where the punishment must fit the crime.

Yeah, well, I applaud the sentiment, Bert, but ask Theresa Dellick her opinion on the subject. She wrote the book on "psychobabble" and her parenting skills, as we know, are impeccable. She would say, the youths in question are misunderstood, need an enhanced psycho-therapeutic support structure and- reflecting that most of the aggressors are black- a greater Federal Effort ( more tax money) to combat "institutional racism". In other words, Theresa would "judiciously" say- the boys doing the punching are as much victims as the victims being punched.

What it all comes down to is that Newt Gingrich was right. He said- about 20 some years ago- for which Liberals called him a cross between Attila the Hun and Count Dracula- that it might be more humane to remove young children from homes headed by dysfunctional welfare queens and put them in a well managed orphanage or foster home instead.

I think he was right. I'm betting that almost all the actors in the "knockout" game were raised by single mothers on welfare. And I'm also betting if these adolescents had been removed from these homes- by not supporting their mothers with welfare- we wouldn't be reading about any of this today.

More concealed-carry and more stand-your-ground laws would help. Let several of these thug/animals get shot and the game would lose its allure.

great article bert. catching them will be almost impossible as they run away like the cowards they are. but once caught I think your idea is a good one. prison doesn't faze them. public humiliation will affect them much worse. also, what you said about parental discipline is correct. there is none. maybe these miscreants didn't get enough "quiet time" while growing up. back in the fifties if a kid was misbehaving or got in trouble at school he not only got paddled at school which was humiliating, also kinds hurt, he got it worse when he got home. the result? there was respect for parents, teachers. policemen, and every other authority figure. today, there is none. I don't know what the answer is but someone better come up with one or someday our country will become totally lawless. I've been saying for a long time, if a person is convicted and sentenced to death, why do they usually outlive most of us on death row, while receiving better healthcare and benefits than millions of americans? it's ridiculous! here's a thought, if some animal is sentenced to death for a heinous crime and there's no doubt of guilt, why let them lounge around for thirty years and spend millions of taxpayer dollars, instead, execute them within seventy-two hours. I'm talking no doubt of guilt. imagine the billions of taxpayer dollars that could be used for good things and also, it would free up prison space to make room for more animals.

Uticashale says - "The hottest development in real estate are shooting ranges. More and more the have's are arming themselves and soon instill their own justice."

Do yourself a favor and don't think that going to a shooting range prepares you for defending yourself or your family or your home or your car or whatever. It doesn't, especially if your under fire. For the untrained, the weapon should only be a last resort and pulling it to defend your stuff may end up costing you your life. Choose wisely.

I know, a hand gun used against these thugs is problematic because if you kill one of them you could be letting yourself in for a "wrongful death" lawsuit if you can't make stand your ground or self-defense stick.

A better approach is pepper spray- if somebody moves in too close and you feel threatened- spray em, doesn't kill em but they're not gonna be in the mood to punch anybody for a while anyway- and it will teach them a lesson- that stuff is painful.

I've started to do a little research on Singapore and I'm not sure their example is one we'd like to emulate- even if we could. From what I see- Singapore is a quasi-police state- run by ethnic Chinese for the benefit of- Ethnic Chinese. Very efficient but a police state, just the same. Remember what they said about Mussolini when he set up shop in Italy- knocking heads: "Well, at least the Trains run on time!" And when Hitler first came in, everybody commented about how "quiet and orderly" the streets of Berlin were- compared to what they had previously been- Well, the reason for that is that 3 weeks after taking over the Nazis already started building Concentration Camps- and that's why the streets were so neat.

gdog-just the facts ma'am:

Despite the steep recession in 1982--brought on by tight money policies that were instituted to squeeze out the historic inflation level of the late 1970s--by 1983, the Reagan policies of reducing taxes, spending, regulation, and inflation were in place. The result was unprecedented economic growth:

This economic boom lasted 92 months without a recession, from November 1982 to July 1990, the longest period of sustained growth during peacetime and the second-longest period of sustained growth in U.S. history. The growth in the economy lasted more than twice as long as the average period of expansions since World War II.10

The American economy grew by about one-third in real inflation-adjusted terms. This was the equivalent of adding the entire economy of East and West Germany or two-thirds of Japan's economy to the U.S. economy.11

◾From 1950 to 1973, real economic growth in the U.S. economy averaged 3.6 percent per year. From 1973 to 1982, it averaged only 1.6 percent. The Reagan economic boom restored the more usual growth rate as the economy averaged 3.5 percent in real growth from the beginning of 1983 to the end of 1990.12

Let us have a small inquiry. Of the persons involved in these aggravated assaults, what of their upbringing? By that I mean, how many were raised in a two-parent household with those parents, to use an archaic term, "MARRIED" to each other? How many? My guess is that very few have such a background. That would be consistent with virtually every cultural and moral psychosis we see around us. Yes, there are a few exceptions. Darned few. The overwhelming number of these perps grew up without the daily presence of an involved father.
I know there are some great single moms out there, in that status due to unforeseen circumstances. But I also know, up close and personally from my work, a whole lot who are treating the operation of popping out kids by anonymous sperm donors as a career. What with all the "benefits", it pays better than working and gives lots more free time.
And the kids grow up like examples from "Lord Of The Flies", a book no longer read much, as its predictions play out in our neighborhoods.

Public corporal punishment is more about shaming the perpetrator for their actions than actually causing them physical harm. Others have pointed out the problems with canning, flogging, etc. Prison sentences cost the taxpayers too much money. So I'm all for doling out a some nice Scarlet Letters on their foreheads.

Temporary tattoos are cheap, painless, nontoxic and can be mixed for varying lengths of time (or reapplied). Make the hoodlums walk around with big fat red "L"'s on their forehead for a six months or more.

I have a better idea. Lets not report on it, and ignore it, and it will go the way of all the other stupid things kids did for attention.

Even though the thought of kids knocking you out is scary lets not forget that that it is a small percentage of people actually playing this game. You are probably more likely to be harmed by something else you take for granted.

This is however a bigger sign of kids not having enough to do. I would bet that most of these cases the children are not in special activities, or have real parental guidance.

Suggest removal:

29tnmartin(120 comments)posted 4 months, 1 week ago

the number of armed robbers, arsonists, and rapists is a rather small percentage of people, but I haven't heard serious proposals to :"let's not report on it, ignore it, and it will go away". Such a notion would correctly be regarded as stupid. Hope so, anyway.
No. There need to be consequences for despicable behavior, and the concept of shame, so long lost, needs to be rediscovered.
I would be in favor of public floggings, beat 'em until they bawl, and do it in front of their friends.
And the perps generally are not "children" in any meaningful sense of the term. A 6'2" 190 pounder is not a child. A 6-year-old is a child. The 17 year old thug is old enough to father a child, or at least be a sperm donor, and far too many already have. And deserves to be treated as a grownup with respect to behavior.
finally, the reference to parental supervision and the lack thereof. Probably true. Many of us can recall a time when people were expected to BE and to REMAIN **married** before engaging in sexual behavior. Now we have teenagers popping out kids which you are expected to support in the manner to which they wish to become accustomed. What idiot thought that was a good idea? Oh, yeah. Lyndon Baines Johnson, a lousy President and despicable person. Democrat, of course.

victim whose episode first coined the term:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12...

woman who made false report against black teens:

http://globalgrind.com/2013/12/09/wom...

police acknowledge that "knockout" is a fabrication:

http://www.wbtv.com/story/24146223/kn...

For those who called for "harsh, swift, punishment" for the so called culprits, I shall venture to guess that you are likely to call for the same punishment for those who make up these stories and for those who rushed to judgment on these fabrications.

@ Thomas,

Ironically, that rally took place in the neighborhood where I grew up.

Those same protestors objected to police profiling and stop-and-frisk of black youths which is viewed as violence against blacks by community activists. That part did not get media attention.

There is no question that violence, whether by teens or by police, takes place in our society. But the idea that "knockouts" is a racialist trend, like "Wilding" 20 years ago, has been discredited as these are not racial attacks but random street crimes. That was the point made in my three links above as media lies increase the harm and were not retracted when found to be false.

As for Fox and swastika, it is quite apropos. By contrast, under Obama corporations have enjoyed their highest profits since the year 1900 which belies the myth that he is a socialist. Do a Google search of you don't believe it.

Right now it looks like only a presidential pardon will spring Andrew Bullock from imprisonment. Is his brother Zach Hauser related to Jamar Hauser?

Open Letter to Bertram de Souza:

Now that you know that this ''knock out'' matter is not a game but is yet another media invention much like the "Wilding" nonsense of a couple of decades ago, what do you have to say about it?

While you are at it Bertram, could you answer why those folks placed their faces in the exact spot those thugs were swinging their fists. Is it Fox News' fault that they didn't tell those people to move their faces. I think Rush Limbaugh may have had something to do with this.

The Pope preached Love and Forgiveness today at mass, and then he went to local hospitals to spread Christmas cheer to all of the sick kids. Right wing translation = The too liberal, Marxist Pope launches a war on healthy kids. He is redistributing Christmas cheer to sick kids. Merry Christmas to all of you, even you Eivo.

I think it was nice that the Pope visited the sick kids at the local hospitals. I bet the Pope was very happy that the mothers of the sick children didn't "choose" to kill them at birth. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to dontbeafool.

Major news in the last couple days. A white kid knocks out an elderly black guy in the "knockout game" and nobody on here wants to talk about it. Nobody is calling for his head or anything. Nobody applauding the police for catching him, nobody happy that he is being charged with a hate crime......just silence..... http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/27/justice...

The white kid admits that he did it whereas the one who was accused of breaking the nuns jaw and raping her is saying that he didn't do the crime. Both should be shipped to the front lines in Afghanistan in lieu of jail time. There is no sense in wasting their warrior efforts.

I agree. Give them a punishment that will leave a lasting imoression. Nothing has staying power like public humilition combined with pain. Dealing with a true anti-social, however, not just some punk wannabe's, will result in more crimes. Therefrore, they must be treated on an individual basis as anyone educated in dealing with criminals should know. Nevertheless, they all need severe punishment. Whoever made the comment about single parented welare moms is a total jackass following the hype of others, incidentally. The point is that foster care and orphanages will not change these situations either. The damage is done. There are few exceptios, though there are SOME.
Catch 'em, punish 'em. Severely.
