Joyce Martin’s dream, to make cupcakes like The Cake Boss, was fulfilled Aug. 13 at Shepherd of the Valley-Boardman.
The dream team at Shepherd of the Valley, as part of the Second Wind Dreams program, partnered with Giant Eagle to make Martin’s Second Wind Dream come true.
Karen Osborn, activity director, explained why Shepherd of the Valley participates in the program.
“It’s nice to be able to grant something that [our residents] never think that they’d have a chance to do,” said Osborn.
Barb Mediate of Giant Eagle surprised Martin with a one-on-one lesson on how to decorate cupcakes.
Among the cupcakes that they decorated together were a bear, dog, rose tip, daffodil, butterfly and bumblebee.
Mediate explained some of the basics.
“You can interchange the different icings tips so you don’t have to make new bags,” said Mediate.
Jon Martin, Joyce’s husband, said that Joyce has always loved to bake.
“She’s always looking up new recipes and trying something new,” said Jon.
As part of her wish, Martin ate lunch and the decorated cupcakes with a few close friends and her husband.
Joyce said she had a great time.
“It was very enlightening. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Joyce.
