Teacher sets up $408,615 scholarship fund at YSU

Staff report

The estate of Dolores Osberg Kreuzwieser, a Youngstown State University graduate who worked more than 20 years as an elementary teacher, has established a scholarship fund by way of a $408,615 gift to the YSU Foundation.

The Dolores Osberg Kreuzwieser Educational Scholarship will provide scholarships to financially challenged students who reside in Poland and major in education.

“Through Mrs. Kreuzwieser’s extraordinary generosity, generations of students will have the opportunity to gain their education, so necessary for a successful and productive life,” said Paul J. McFadden, president of the YSU Foundation.

Kreuzwieser, a native of Struthers who grew up and lived in Poland, died on May 24, 2012. She was an elementary school teacher for the Youngstown parochial school system for more than two decades. She had also worked at U.S. Steel, Youngstown Sheet and Tube in the tabulating department, and was a licensed real estate agent. She was a member of the Holy Family Church, Ladies of Charity, Company of Angela (Ursuline Sisters), Secular Franciscan Order and served as a board member of Addiction Programs of Mahoning County.

“Dee was compassionate about her desire to help students obtain higher education, particularly those pursuing careers as educators. She not only left a legacy, she effectively demonstrated her teaching through this legacy,” stated James Dietz of Friedman and Rummell, Mrs. Kreuzwieser’s estate planning attorney.

Applicants for the scholarship must reside in the Poland school district, be enrolled full or part time in the Beeghly College of Education, major in education, and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The scholarship is for one year and is renewable through the application and selection process. The award, when combined with all other financial assistance, will not exceed the cost of full tuition, books and supplies. Selection is to be made by the YSU Foundation in conjunction with the scholarship committee in the Beeghly College of Education.
