Pittsburgh zoo to host elephant, rhino experts

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is set to host a symposium of more than 200 elephant and rhinoceros experts this week.

Experts from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Germany, Cambodia, Indonesia and India were expected to attend the 2013 International Elephant & Rhino Symposium.

The experts will meet to share information on veterinary care, breeding in captivity, animal behavior and other research, and travel to the zoo’s International Conservation Center for elephants in Somerset County, about 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

“This symposium is a great opportunity to learn about groundbreaking work in research, veterinary care and breeding from a very talented and diverse group of experts,” said Dr. Barbara Baker, the zoo’s president and chief executive officer. “Their continuous efforts in the field are not only helping to save the declining populations of rhinos and elephants in the wild, but also to further our efforts here in the United States and the care and conservation of these animals.”

The zoo plans to release more information Wednesday about the event.
