Juan Romero homered and drove in two runs for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, who used a big eighth inning to defeat the State College Spikes 7-2 in a New York-Penn League game Thursday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Josh McAdams had a two-run double in the eighth as the Scrappers scored five runs to break a 2-2 tie.
Robel Garcia singled, doubled and scored twice for Mahoning Valley (23-30), while Claudio Bautista had two hits and scored a run.
Caleb Hamrick started and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits with a strikeout. Kyle Blair (1-0) got the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Trevor Frank pitched a scoreless ninth.
For State College (31-23), Brett Wiley had three hits and drove in a run.
Jhonny Polanco (3-3) gave up four runs (three earned) in 11/3 innings to get the loss.
The Scrappers now head to Auburn for a two-game series, then travel to Williamsport for two games.
