Beginning today, the ramp from Interstate 680 northbound to U.S. Route 224 will be closed through mid-October for road construction, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation

The detour will be Western Reserve Road to South Avenue. The work is part of a $5.4 million project to widen the Route 224 bridge over I-680 and improve the I-680/Route 224 interchange. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by late October 2014.

Honorary starter

BROOKLYN, MICH.

David Balestrino Jr. of Youngstown, an Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient, has been selected as the honorary starter for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR race.

The Associated Press reports that Balestrino won a contest on the Pure Michigan Facebook page, getting hundreds of votes for his entry on why he wanted to wave the green flag on race day at Michigan International Speedway.

Balestrino served as a combat engineer from 2003 to 2009 and received a Purple Heart during service in Iraq. In his entry, Balestrino said he would like to start the race in honor of his 6-year old son, Brady, after missing the first year of Brady’s life while in Iraq.

Friends of Fido event

Poland

Friends of Fido, a voice for more than 1,000 dogs a year at the Mahoning County Dog Pound, hosts its first Celebrity Bartending Night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Road.

Admission will be $10, and entertainment, food, cash bar, basket auctions and 50-50 raffles will be offered. All tips earned by bartenders will benefit Friends of Fido.

The organization spends more than $60,000 annually. More than $40,000 is used for vetting dogs, which includes spaying and neutering and treatment of heartworm. About $10,000 is used for fees to take dogs from the pound so they can go to a rescue or foster family. Approximately $20,000 of annual funding takes care of temporary boarding, transporting and other costs.

The closing and delays at Rt 224 have forced additional traffic to the South Avenue and Western Reserve intersection. Disrespectful motorists continue to block this intersection especially during the 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm hours. The light for Western Reserve turns green and those turning from South Avenue continue to block all traffic. I have yet to see an officer from any department enforcing traffic laws at this location. There are not even signs to advise motorists of the obvious.
