Mahoning Valley students return from Germany trip

Staff report

Seven Boardman, Austintown Fitch, Canfield and Cardinal Mooney students, accompanied by Sieglinde Warren, exchange coordinator, and Ed Smith, Mooney German teacher, recently returned from Germany where they stayed in the homes of students they had hosted this past fall.

Hennef is on the Rhine River in west Central Germany near Cologne.

The German hosts planned many activities including visits to the Mayor of Hennef, an all-day trip on the Rhine which included viewing the Seven Hills of the Rhineland and a trip to the former German capital, Bonn.

They toured the city of Cologne and climbed the 533 steps to reach the top tower of the Cologne Cathedral.

The group also had the opportunity to spend a day in the Netherlands, where they visited the home of Anne Frank and the Rembrandt Museum.

This is the eighth year that the exchange with the Gesamtschule in Hennef has taken place.

A ninth exchange is planned with the same school in November 2013 with 12 German students and two teachers arriving for the Thanks-giving holiday.

The goal of the exchange is to provide an opportunity for the German and Mahoning Valley students to experience each other’s culture in their home and school.
