Canfield couple accused of sexually abusing her grandson

A detective says a Canfield Township couple arrested Friday on charges they repeatedly sexually abused a young boy had been carrying out the abuse for at least the past 21/2 years, maybe longer.

Terry Martin, who just retired as a detective with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and who was assigned to county children services, said the boy’s father came to detectives first in late March because his son had been saying for the past couple of years he had been touched inappropriately.

A county grand jury Thursday indicted Jeffrey Evans, 44, on five counts of rape and five counts of gross sexual imposition, and Liza Timm, 51, on five counts of gross sexual imposition and five counts of endangering children.

The rape counts carry maximum sentences of life in prison without parole. Court records list an address for the couple on Meadowood Drive.

Martin, who took the case before he retired, said Timm is the boy’s grandmother on the boy’s mother’s side. A court awarded full custody to the father, who lives in Medina. He drove to Youngstown to make a complaint in March, Martin said.

Martin said the boy, who just turned 8, had been touching other students in his school inapprop- riately since he was at least 5 in a way that is not normal for young children.

Martin said the boy had been complaining that he had been touched inappropriately. It had been going on for at least 21/2 years that investigators know of, but the boy said the touching had been going on “ever since he could remember.”

After the father was awarded custody, Timm was granted visitation rights, but those rights were suspended during the investigation, Martin added.
