The Mill Creek Metro Parks offered a family farm tour July 18.
The farm tour featured a wagon ride through the 402-acre farm, located at 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road, across from the Canfield Fairgrounds. On the tour, the wagon traveled past the pumpkin patches and the wheat and corn fields. Guests saw Texas Longhorn cows grazing in the fields.
“These are the type of cows we use to get the meat that we would eat on a daily basis,” said Delorean Jones, agricultural educator.
In addition, families learn different agricultural facts and were able to visit the poultry and horse barns. The family tours offer an opportunity for families to enjoy the farm while the kids are out of school.
Brenda Markley, agricultural education programs manager said the tours give people the idea of what it’s like to live 50-100 years ago, since most don’t have that experience.
“Statistically, today less than two percent of people live, work and thrive on farms,” said Markley.
Jones said the Metro Parks does at least two family tours per week. “We’re trying to educate the general public on agriculture,” said Jones. Metro Parks offers family-guided tours every Thursday at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.millcreekmetroparks.org/ or call 330-533-7572.
