hermitage, pa. Bolotin Furniture, founded in 1906, to close up shop

A Hermitage landmark store is closing after being open for more than a century.

Bolotin Furniture will close once the store is able to sell its inventory. It was founded in 1906 by Simon Bolotin and has remained family-owned with four generations of Bolotins running the store at 3056 E. State St.

Mark Bolotin said Wednesday the decision to close the store was based on a few factors. One was that there was not another generation ready to take over the operation. The second factor was age.

“My children have never lived here. My wife and I moved back seven years ago,” Bolotin said. “My children have already got careers.”

Another factor is that Bolotin started an online company seven years ago that sells home furnishings through eBay that are similar, but not the same, as what’s sold in the store, he said. The online store has done very well.

“I’m basically working two full-time jobs at 67 years old, and one seemed a whole lot more manageable,” Bolotin said.

Business in the area hasn’t been great the past few years, although in the past year, the store has seen sales better than in quite some time, he said.

But the decision to close was planned and wasn’t due to sales. Bolotin said he has grandchildren in Brooklyn whom “he doesn’t see enough,” and he and his wife wanted to travel.

The online business can be run from anywhere with a laptop, he said.

“It was an emotional situation to close the store because of the employees who will lose their jobs,” Bolotin said.

In addition, Bolotin and his wife have become close to some of the store’s suppliers and customers, he said. The history of family ownership of the store also was not a factor in the decision.

“The business is nothing but bricks. I don’t get emotionally tied to things, but to people,” Bolotin said.

The furniture store closed at the end of business Wednesday and will reopen at 10 a.m. next Thursday to start the closing sale, Bolotin said.

The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. next Thursday-Aug. 16; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 17; noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 18; and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 19 through Aug. 21 or until all merchandise is sold.
