Woman to trial on toddler drowning charges

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania woman has been ordered to stand trial on a refiled criminal homicide charge in the accidental bathtub drowning of her 13-month-old son.

Twenty-five-year-old Tonya Thomas, of White Township, had already been ordered to stand trial in Indiana County on charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.

But Homer City District Judge Susanne Steffee had previously ruled in May there was insufficient evidence for the homicide charge.

Prosecutors refiled the homicide charge and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Steffee upheld the charge. A child welfare worker testified today that Thomas had been warned not to leave her young children unattended in the bathtub.

Authorities say Thomas left the boy in the bathtub alone with two other toddler siblings before he drowned Feb. 2 at home.
