Joni Edgar of Youngstown and her grandson Davis Edgar Gordon, 12, of Solon are in the middle of nine holes of golf when two deer sprint by in the night.

All the golfers stop to watch the deer, who interrupted their game, as they run off into Mill Creek Park.

“That’s one of the greatest benefits about golfing at night,” Joni said. The Par 3 Golf Course at Mill Creek MetroParks’ James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area off McCollum Road on the city’s West Side offers lighted night play from 8 to 11 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday.

Although after-dark isn’t the most-popular time to play, dozens of golfers make their way to the course each night.

Floodlights are turned on about 8:30 p.m. on the front nine holes. The lights on the back nine aren’t working. They were struck by lightning about three years ago.

Joni and her grandson prefer night golf to the hustle and bustle of the course during normal hours. “The sun’s not in my eyes, and it’s nice and cool,” Joni said. “The course is so quiet and peaceful; it’s really enjoyable.”
