Man, 73, to be tried in abduction, assault of girl

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — A Lancaster County man charged with abducting and sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl has waived his preliminary hearing, allowing charges against him to proceed to county court.

WHTM-TV reports 73-year-old Harold Leroy Herr waived all charges before a district judge today, including kidnapping, sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. Herr is being held without bail.

A formal arraignment was scheduled for August 23.

Authorities say Herr forced the girl into his car July 11 as she played outside her grandmother’s Lancaster Township home.

Police say the girl was rescued about two hours later when two teenage boys spotted her inside a car driving through their apartment complex and followed on their bicycles until Herr stopped and let her go.

Herr served 20 years for a 1990 child rape conviction.
