Humility of Mary Health Partners’ Multicultural Competence and Inclusion Council has been recognized as one of the top 25 employee resource groups and diversity councils for 2013 in the nation.

Recipients of the award from the Association of Diversity Councils, a practice group of PRISM International, will be honored at a dinner award ceremony in October during the second annual 2013 Diversity Council Conference in Alexandria, Va.

“Winning this award brings our organization one step closer to accomplishing our goal of providing an environment of inclusion that engages every individual — patient, family, significant other, staff, physician and volunteer — involved in the process and delivery of equity care,” said Katrina Walker, HMHP’s director of multicultural competence and inclusion.

Recognizing that effective communication is one of the vital links in providing quality care, HMHP provides language- interpretation services for limited- or non-English speaking people, including current and prospective patients and their families, according to the health organization’s website.

An example of a project enhancing diversity is over-the-phone interpreting service.

Provided by Cyracom, it can provide interpreting services in more than 200 languages, with services available in 15 seconds or less for many languages. Cyracom’s focus is health care, and its interpreters receive 120 hours of specialized training, including 40 hours of training in medical terminology.

Another example of inclusion and diversity cited on the HMHP website is the HMHP Minority Award, which the health system said encourages minority candidates to enter the health-care field through an HMHP-affiliated education program while they work at one of HMHP’s facilities.

The Diversity Council Honors Award recognizes the contributions and achievements of employee- resource groups and diversity councils that lead diversity and inclusion processes in their organizations and demonstrate results in their workforce, workplace and marketplace, said Philip Berry, executive director of the Association of Diversity Councils.

Award recipients include a diverse combination of national corporations, governmental agencies and the military, representing all sectors, geographies and organizational sizes, Berry said.
