Feds contest embezzler’s request for release

ST. MARYS, Pa. (AP) — Federal prosecutors are opposing a financial adviser’s request to be released from jail until his sentencing next month for embezzling more than $422,000 from a northwestern Pennsylvania animal shelter and one of his private clients.

The Bradford Era reports prosecutors in Erie are opposing the move because 48-year-old Richard Danz uprooted his family and moved to North Carolina two days after FBI agents searched his St. Marys home last August.

Danz’s attorney argues he didn’t make any effort to hide from law enforcement, but federal prosecutors disagree.

Danz pleaded guilty in April to stealing most of the money from the Elk County Humane Society in St. Marys, where he volunteered as accountant and treasurer from September 2008 until June 2012. He’s due for sentencing Sept. 10.
