YSU roundup

News and notes

Solid start: Youngstown State held its first practice on Thursday, a 21/2-hour workout with players in helmets, jerseys and shorts. “I was pretty encouraged overall and I’m just kind of anxious to get the pads on,” Penguins coach Eric Wolford said. “We kind of picked up where we left off from spring ball. I saw some good things from the second, third and fourth [string] quarterbacks, which is something I wanted to see. It’s hard to tell with no pads on as far as the line of scrimmage goes. I like some of the new additions in the secondary. I think that’s going to help with special teams and in the secondary.” Wolford said the first few practices will focus on fundamentals, “so when the pads are on, they don’t get exposed or get hurt. I’m talking about head position, base, alignment, everything.” The first practice had a good tempo, with the coaches (particularly defensive coordinator Joe Tresey) screaming at anyone who lagged behind between drills. “Some of the new guys had to do the conditioning test [Thursday] and they found out real quick that it’s no joke,” Wolford said.

New recruit: St. Clairsville RB Jaylon Brown (5-7, 165) verbally committed to YSU on Thursday. The Red Devils went 14-1 last season, losing to Clinton Massie in the Division IV state championship game. Brown rushed for 69 yards and a TD in that game and was named second team All-Ohio. He also finished third in the 100-yard dash and fourth in the 200 at June’s Division II state track meet. Brown is the third known commitment in the 2014 class, joining Lakewood St. Edward DB Derrick Thomas (5-8, 165), who committed last week, and Fairless QB Hunter Wells (6-5, 190), who committed last month.

This and that: YSU athletic director Ron Strollo said the new scoreboard/videoboard in Beeghly Center will be installed over Labor Day weekend. The old scoreboard was removed last week. ... YSU is scheduled to practice from 4 to 6 p.m. each of the next four days. All practices are at Stambaugh Stadium and are open to the public. Practices may be moved to the WATTS for inclement weather.
