Two locals in Junior PGA Championship

Haylee Harford of Leavittsburg and Blake Prince of East Liverpool both shot a 222 through three rounds of the Junior PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C.

For Harford, the 222 was just good enough to qualify in the girls division which played the course at 6,130 yards. Prince missed qualifying by four strokes in the boys division which played the course at 7,040 yards.

Harford’s round-by-round scores were 75-74 and a 73 on Thursday. Prince shot 77 on Thursday after rounds of 76 and 69 earlier in the week.

Local golfers do well in youth tournament

Jacinta Pikunas of Boardman and Jared Wilson of Columbiana were winners Thursday in the 13-15 year-old divisions of the Northern Ohio Junior PGA Kenny Novak Championship at Club Walden in Aurora.

Pikunas, who finished second on Sunday in the 15-17 division of the Greatest Golfer of the Valley junior tournament, tied at 81 with Reva Morris of Newbury, then won on the first playoff hole.

Wilson shot a 2-over 74 to win the boys 13-15 bracket. He was followed by two other Greatest Golfer junior placers: Ken Keller of Boardman, winner of the 12-14 GG division, was sixth Thursday with an 82; Zach Jacobson of Poland, third in the 12-14 Sunday, was 10th Thursday with an 86.

Joey Vitali of Warren bested three other golfers in the boys 12 division with a round of 80 and Hannah Kefler of Canfield was the only competitor in the girls 12 division. She shot a round of 101.

Other area placers Thursday: Boys 16-19, Jacob Harrah of Newton Falls, tied for 11th, 161 (36 holes), and Joey Cilone of East Liverpool, 165; Girls 16-19, Michele Whiteleather of Canfield, eighth, 186, and Nadya Stratton of Poland, 10th, 194; Boys 13-15, Isaac Davidson of East Liveprool, 12th, 87, and Bruce William Wiggins of Columbiana, 16th, 92; Girls 13-15, Alexis Cadle of Berlin Center, seventh, 91, and Haley Dean of Cortland, 13th, 99.

Little Red Dragons plan memorial before games

NILES

The Niles Little Red Dragons will host a memorial before games against Warren on Sunday at Jim Leeper Sr. Field in Waddell Park. The memorial presentation is scheduled to begin at noon and the football games will follow.

The organization will honor the family of Daylan Ray, a former Little Red Dragon player who was one of six teens killed in a car accident in March in Warren. His number also will be retired.

The Red Dragons also will honor the family of Courtney Miller, a former Little Red Dragon cheerleader who died after a car accident in Florida in March.

Volleyball officials meet on YSU campus

YOUNGSTOWN

All area volleyball officials should attend a meeting Sunday at 7 p.m. at Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium/DeBartolo Room.

Bike run on Sunday benefits United Way

The Western Reserve Building and Construction Trades will hold its third annual Motorcycle Bike Run Sunday to benefit the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Operating Engineers Local 66, 291 McClurg Road, Boardman. Breakfast will be provided by Panera Bread.

The first bike out will be at 11 a.m. The Poker Run is about 80 miles, starting and finishing at Local 66. Stops are scheduled at The Old Stage Coach Inn in North Georgetown, Marks Landing at Guilford Lake, Shale Tavern and Grille in Lisbon, and Backyard Bar & Grill in Poland Township. The last bike in will be at 4 p.m. followed by a presentation of prizes and dinner sponsored by Gia’s Pizzeria. There will also be a raffle.

The cost is $15 per rider and $5 per passenger. The first 100 participants to register will receive a T-shirt sponsored by Gem-Young Insurance & Financial Services, Inc. All proceeds from the event will benefit United Way and the AFL-CIO Community Services. For pre-registration and more information, please call Tara Mady at 330-746-8494.
