Sandlot roundup | Thursday’s games

AGES 9-10

Dover 14, Canfield 12

Canfield’s comeback fell short on Thursday. Dover had a four-run advantage entering the final frame when the locals began a rally. Canfield got within two runs, but eventually “ran out of outs” said coach Duke Starr. With the loss, Canfield has been eliminated from the tournament and will have to settle for a fourth-place finish. “We had a bunch of ups and downs and nobody here gave us much of a chance to do anything,” Starr said. “We ended up in a tough bracket and battled, but came up just a bit short.”

Portsmouth 3, Poland 0

All tournament long, the kryptonite for Poland was Portsmouth’s pitching. Such was the case again in the first game of the finals. Trailing 1-0 for most of the game, Poland was within striking distance but couldn’t break through at the plate. Portsmouth added two more runs and eventually claimed the state title. Poland’s two losses both came at the hands, or arms, of the eventual champion as it was able to score only one run against Portsmouth. “We had a great year,” coach Matt Bobbey said. “They never gave up. These girls were overachievers and we got more out of them than we ever expected. They earned it with their effort and hard work.”

Janesville (Wis.) 6, Mill Creek 4

Despite getting a home run from Ricky Havrilla, Mill Creek lost its tournament opener. Vincent Armeni contributed two hits and two RBIs. Kenny Gross and Andrew Sabella each had a hit in the game. Havrilla was named the Cal Ripken player of the game for Mill Creek.

Mill Creek 14, Jamestown (Ind.) 2

Mill Creek got its bats going in its second game of the day. Andrew Sabella knocked in four runs on two hits to back a strong pitching performance from David Cunnigham. Vincent Armeni — the Cal Ripken player of the game for Mill Creek — added to the lead with his bat and helped protect it with his play in the field at shortstop. Mill Creek’s next game is today at 4:15 p.m. against host Galesburg.
