Ohio man gets maximum 8-year sentence in fatal crash

CINCINNATI (AP) — A 20-year-old Ohio man was sentenced to the maximum of eight years in prison today stemming from a car crash that killed a 22-year-old woman.

In handing down the sentence in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, Judge Nadine Allen told Dennis Alsip Jr. that she was disappointed the law didn’t allow her to give him a harsher sentence for his conviction last month of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Witnesses reported that Aslip was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic on a state highway west of Cincinnati on July 16, 2012, before his car landed on top of a car driven by 22-year-old Lisa Hasting, an emergency medical technician.

Prosecutors say Alsip was either on drugs, alcohol or both.

The young woman’s mother, Karen Hasting, held up enlarged photos of her daughter, one of her smiling while on vacation shortly before her death, others while she was on life support in the hospital and one of the cemetery where she’s now buried.

“I hate you,” Karen Hasting yelled at Aslip, who stood handcuffed just feet away. “I wish you have a painful, miserable life. I wish you nothing but bad luck and bad health.”

She said that Aslip should have been the one killed in the crash.
