YSU’s Mitzel medalist in HL women’s golf

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Sophomore Allison Mitzel had a sensational final round at the Horizon League Championships on Sunday and took home medalist honors while the YSU women’s golf team finished second. Mitzel is the fourth Penguin to win league title joining Lori Hatcher (2003), Katie Rogner (2008) and Samantha Formeck (2009).

Mitzel had a 73 on Sunday and finished with a three-round total of 221, five-over-par for the event, and seven shots ahead of Valparaiso’s Kelly Voigt.

Detroit won the crown with a 920 while YSU placed second with a 940. It is the fifth time YSU finished as the runner-up in the league, the first time since 2010.

Sarah Heimlich and Emily Rohanna tied for 11th place with a 239. On Sunday, Heimlich shot a 79 while Rohanna had an 82. Aislynn Merling was at 244 including an 82 on Sunday and Sana Khan also shot 82 to finish with a 250.

YSU women beaten 4-3 in Horizon tennis final

Indianapolis, Ind.

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team forced Illinois-Chicago to a final winner-take-all deciding set in the Horizon League championship match, but came up short falling 4-3 to the Flames on Sunday at the West Indy Racquet Club.

YSU got singles wins from Paula deMan at No. 1 (her 16th consecutive victory), Margarita Sadovnikova at No. 2 (11th straight win) and Marta Burak at No. 3 (15th in a row).

DeMan finished the season with a 23-1 singles record. Burak finished 28-5 and Sadovnikova was 23-11.

It was the 17th consecutive conference championship for UIC and the first time since 2008 it was pushed to a 4-3 decision.

The Penguins finished the year 15-10 while advancing to the Horizon League final match for just the second time in school history.

YSU’s Pluchinsky ties Horizon League record

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Youngstown State freshman Brandon Pluchinsky fired a Horizon League record-tying round of 66 on Sunday during the final round of the league event.

His solid round helped lead the Penguins to a final round 290 and a 911 for the tournament and a sixth-place finish. Valpariso won its first Horizon League title with an 884 while Cleveland State was second with an 888.

Pluchinsky’s round featured nine birdies, seven pars, a bogey and a double-bogey. He played the final 13 holes in an amazing 44 strokes.

Bryan Yeo had his best round of the event finishing with a 73 for a 229 total. D.J. Holub also had a 73 on Sunday and also finished with a 229. Bill Gaffney and Mark Olbrych both shot 78 on Sunday. Gaffney finished at 230 and Olbrych at 237.

Sharon Speedway runs six divisions Saturday

HARTFORD

Winners Saturday night in the six divisions of racing at Sharon Speedway included Rex King of Bristolville in the Big Block Modifieds; Mike Pegher Jr. of Wexford, Pa., in the Late Models; Alan Dellinger in the Modifieds; Paul Davis of Fowler in the Stock Cars; Steve Burns Jr. of Masury in the Econo Mods; and Scott Gilliland of Warren in the Mini Stocks.

For Gilliland it was his second straight win and extended his points lead. Dellinger’s win was his first of the year but 87th in the division in his career.

Pegher won the $1,000 Weekly Series special earlier in the day at Pittsburgh Motor Speedway then towed north to Sharon and made it a clean sweep.

Sharon Speedway will be back in action May 4 with its six weekly divisions. Pits open at 4 p.m. with grandstands at 5 and racing at 7. Grandstand admission is $13, kids 13-under are free. Pit passes are $25.

Weathersfield’s Ronghi captures tennis title

EAST LIVERPOOL

Joe Ronghi of Weathersfield recently won the East Liverpool Indoor Club Championships Tennis Tourney. In the championship match he defeated George Whittaker of Chester, W.Va., 10-8.

It is the 12th amateur title for Ronghi, tennis coach for the boys and girls teams at Lordstown and a former standout at Niles.
