Detroit’s Steward commits to YSU hoops

YOUNGSTOWN

Detroit Cass Tech senior Kyle Steward, a 6-foot-7 forward, verbally committed to play basketball at Youngstown State on Thursday. He announced the decision on his Twitter account.

Steward also had offers from Cleveland State, Florida Atlantic, Rider and Jacksonville University and Houston Baptist. He is the third freshman to commit to the Penguins in this year’s class, joining guards Jalon Plummer and Marcus Keene.

YSU assistant Steve Hall was a standout at Cass Tech in the late 1980s.

Penguin track & field

The Youngstown State women’s 4x100 meter relay team placed 16 out of 77 schools Thursday at the Penn Relays.

The relay team of Laura Kosiorek, Ciara Jarrett, Alexis Washington and Nina Grambling had a time of 46.34 seconds.

Also in action was Nicole Pachol who had a time of 1:04.31 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Heimlich selected

Youngstown State senior golfer Sarah Heimlich was named All-Horizon League, the conference announced on Thursday at its annual awards banquet.

It was the second straight year Heimlich was named all-league.

This year she led the Penguins in a team-best four tournaments.

She will be playing in her fourth and final Horizon League Championships starting today.

Olbrych honored

Youngstown State junior Mark Olbrych, a native of Boardman, was named All-Horizon League.

Olbrych is the first YSU men’s golfer to be named to the all-league squad since Ryan Stocke in 2010.

He has been one of the team’s most consistent performers all year. He had two top-10 finishes on the year.

He shot a season-best round of 68 at the Jackrabbit Invitational and had a 69 at the Wildcat Invitational earlier this month.

Yo. Gymnastics Center

Six Level 8 gymnasts from the Youngstown Gymnastics Center qualified to compete in the Junior Olympic Level 8 regional.

Megan Janak, 7th grader at Glenwood Middle School; Lauren Manski of Salem; Mya Kasten of Canfield; Tamsin Day of Boardman; Willow Creek Learning Center; Nicole Ruse of Poland and Ashley Jones of Canfield were in action.

Kasten placed third on floor exercise with 9.475 and Janak was fifth balance beam.

Navardauskas wins Romandie stage

GRANGES, Switzerland

Ramunas Navardauskas of Lithuania sprinted to his first individual stage win at the Tour of Romandie on Thursday, and Chris Froome of Britain maintained the overall lead.

The 25-year-old Garmin Sharp rider won the 118.15-mile stage in 4 hours, 51 minutes, 49 seconds.

Enrico Gasparotto of Italy was second for the Astana team, and Wednesday’s stage winner, Gianni Meersman of Belgium, was third. Froome retained the lead he’s held throughout the six-day race through French-speaking Switzerland.

Wambach to sit out NWSL home opener

ELMA, N.Y.

Abby Wambach will miss the Western New York Flash’s first game in her hometown in the new National Women’s Soccer League because of a head injury.

Wambach struck in the back of the head by a ball but kept playing during the second half of a 1-1 tie at Washington last weekend.

The Flash said Thursday that Wambach was improving but will be held out against Boston on Saturday for precautionary reasons.
