Boardman students win Governor’s art awards

Published: Fri, April 26, 2013 @ 12:00 a.m.

Boardman High School student Ashley Brunko won the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Brunko’s graphic design piece was selected as one of the top 25 pieces of art in the 2013 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. Her work was selected from more than 12,000 pieces, which were entered in the 15 regions around the state.

Brunko, a senior at Boardman High School, was inspired to create her award-winning piece from an assignment given in graphic teacher Jim Cliff’s Graphics II course. The assignment was to select an overused font and reinvent it through manipulation, filters and effects. Brunko’s solution to the assignment was to deconstruct the letters into 3-D objects. Noticing a resemblance between her letters and a blueprint, she added an actual blueprint to her work as a background.

Judges for the Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition are college educators and artists from Ohio, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Michigan. A recognition ceremony was held on April 14 at The Riffe Center, Capitol Theatre in Columbus. The exhibition will be on display in the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, 30 East Broad St. through May 16 during normal business hours. This exhibition is a cooperative effort between the Governor of Ohio, the Ohio Department of Education, colleges, universities and corporate sponsors.
