2 teens unhurt after car race ends in pond

OLEY, Pa. (AP) — Police in Berks County say two teenagers had to swim to safety after their car went airborne and landed in a pond during a race with another vehicle.

Oley Township police Officer Michael Lentz says the crash happened Monday afternoon and left the car partially submerged in the pond. He says 18-year-old Zachary Fulmer and his 16-year-old passenger weren’t hurt and were able to swim safely to shore.

The Reading Eagle reports Lentz says they were apparently racing another driver as they approached an intersection; their car went airborne, landing about 75 feet into the pond. Fulmer told police his brakes failed.

The other driver fled and police are still investigating the accident.

Fire department crews eventually removed the car from the pond using a tow truck.
