Police are still investigating the shooting

Two men remain hospitalized, and police are sorting through details behind a midday Monday shooting on the city’s South Side in an otherwise quiet residential neighborhood.

Jakeem Johnson, 27, of Youngstown, and Dewaylon Bruton, 31, of Youngstown both were shot outside of a home in the 800 block of East Avondale Avenue. Bruton is listed in critical condition, and Johnson is stable.

Police are investigating and have spoken with Johnson in the hospital.

Johnson told police he was sitting in a black Chevrolet Suburban in the driveway of the home with a friend, waiting to purchase some pills. He said Bruton, with whom he has been involved in an ongoing dispute, pulled into the driveway behind him and appeared to be agitated.

Johnson said he and Bruton have had issues and planned to fight, but their ongoing feud was not the source of problems Monday.

Johnson said a few moments after Bruton’s arrival he heard gunshots and ducked down on the car to avoid being hit by gunfire, but was struck by a bullet coming through the car. He was taken to the hospital by the friend he was waiting with in the car.

Another man arrived at the hospital with Bruton in the car and was attempting to leave before being stopped by hospital security. The driver told police Bruton is his cousin. He said he was not present at the scene of the shooting, but picked Bruton up a short distance from the scene.

Witnesses said they saw one person fleeing the scene while holding his chest. They said he ran west on Avondale before he fled through a backyard.
