Civil War expert Allen C. Guelzo of Gettysburg, Pa., will give a presentation that will launch educational programming at the new Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center.

Guelzo will present “Was the Civil War the Second American Revolution?” at 7 p.m. May 4 at the history center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown.

“We are honored to bring a nationally renowned scholar of the Civil War to our community as a highlight of a series of programs and observances of this national calamity that occurred 150 years ago,” said Bill Lawson, executive director of the MVHS. “There were fundamental changes in the way Americans viewed their nation and each other during and after the Civil War, and Dr. Guelzo is among the most qualified individuals of our time to present the scope and gravity of these changes.”

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and must be picked up in advance at The Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., between 1 and 5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. For information, contact the MVHS at 330-743-2589, or go to mahoninghistory.org.

Gguelzo is the director of Civil War-era studies and a professor of history at Gettysburg College.

He is the author of “Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President” (Wm. Eerdmans, 1999), which won both the Lincoln Prize and the Abraham Lincoln Institute Prize in 2000; “Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America” (Simon & Schuster, 2004), which also won the Lincoln Prize and the Abraham Lincoln Institute Prize, for 2005; “Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates That Defined America” (Simon & Schuster, 2008), on the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858; and several other works. Last year, he published “Fateful Lightning: A New History of the Civil War and Reconstruction” (Oxford University Press).

Next Month, Knopf will publish his book “Gettysburg: The Last Invasion.”
