Austintown Middle School, under the guidance of student council, recently collected more than $1,000 for the charity Pasta for Pennies.

As part of that fundraiser, AMS participated in a hat day, a staff jeans day, a lunch campaign, a volunteer pie-in-the-face contest, and culminated in a classroom contest for a pasta party, courtesy of Olive Garden.

The winner of that contest was Michelle Benich’s class, which collected more than $200 for the charity. They were awarded with the pasta party April 3.

“Students would bring in bags full of change for the fundraiser,” said Benich. “They were really self-motivated. There are 28 students in this class and they really got excited about this fundraiser. I think a big part of that is that they are sixth-graders and they really wanted to beat the eighth-graders.”

Elise Yantes, a student in Benich’s class and a member of the student council, brought in the most money in her class.

“I brought in about $100 in coins,” said Yantes. “I cleaned my room, cleaned my parents’ cars; I looked for change everywhere.”

This is the third year AMS has participated in the Pasta for Pennies campaign, the proceeds of which benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. During the years AMS has participated, it has raised more than $4,700 for the society.
