Guitar is the focus of a monthlong series of free concerts, recitals and master classes at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, including one by “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” veteran Joe Negri. Here is the schedule:
Today: A guest-artist recital and master class featuring Russian guitarist Vladimir Gorbach, winner of the 2011 Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition. The master class is at 9 a.m. in Bliss Hall Room 2222, and the recital is at 8 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall. As a first-place winner in more than 10 of the most important international competitions (Serbia, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Greece and Italy), Gorbach’s most recent win at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artist Competition has earned him a 50-city concert tour of the United States, Mexico and Canada with additional appearances in Brazil and China.
Friday, noon: A master class conducted by veteran guitarist Joe Negri in Room 2222, Bliss Hall, includes performances by several Dana guitar students and duos. One of the most recognized names in Pittsburgh guitar circles, Negri was known to millions of children as Handyman Negri on the PBS show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” As a composer, he has written music for many documentary film scores.
April 18, 8 p.m.: The Dana Guitar Ensembles perform in Bliss Recital Hall, featuring classical and contemporary with selections from Gershwin, Bach, Gismonti and Porter.
April 24, 12:15 p.m.: The Dana Guitar Ensembles perform a Music at Noon concert in the Butler Institute of American Art, featuring individual, duo and quartet performances.
