Parto’s offers free golf on April 15

WR Nelson signs with Browns

CLEVELAND

The Cleveland Browns signed free agent wide receiver David Nelson to a one-year contract.

Nelson, who played three seasons for Buffalo, is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in last season’s opener. The 6-foot-5, 214-pounder started 17 games for the Bills, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Nelson had 94 catches for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns with the Bills. In 2011, he was second on the club in catches (61) and receiving yards (658). He also had five TDs.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said Nelson “possesses very good size and hands, and has a good feel for the game. He showed promise with Buffalo two years ago before missing most of last season with an injury, and we feel as though he will be a good addition to our group of wide receivers.”

Maple Leafs defeat Rangers

TORONTO

Phil Kessel scored twice to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers to open an important home-and-home series between the Eastern Conference rivals.

Toronto (22-13-4) remained fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, moving four points ahead of idle Ottawa with its fifth win in six games.

Derek Stepan pulled New York into a 3-3 tie at 9:00 of the third period, but Kessel put Toronto back ahead 39 seconds later.

The Rangers (19-16-4) remain tied with the idle New York Islanders for seventh in the Eastern Conference with 42 points.

James van Riemsdyk and Ryan O’Byrne also scored for Toronto.

Rick Nash had the other two goals for New York.

Bruins wallop Hurricanes

BOSTON

Brad Marchand scored two goals and Tuukka Rask stopped 40 shots, leading the Boston Bruins over the struggling Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

Rich Peverley, Andrew Ference, Jordan Caron and Nathan Horton each added a goal, and defenseman Dennis Seidenberg established a career-high with three assists for Boston, which moved a point behind Montreal in the Northeast Division.

The Bruins won for the fourth time in five games by scoring a season-high in goals after dropping a 2-1 decision at the rival Canadiens on Saturday.

Patrick Dwyer and Drayson Bowman scored for the Hurricanes, who lost for the 12th time in 13 games, 11 of them coming in regulation.

Carolina has allowed four or more goals in 10 of its last 14.

Lions release WR Robiskie

ALLEN PARK, Mich.

The Detroit Lions have released wide receiver Brian Robiskie.

Robiskie played in six games and caught four passes with the Lions last season after signing as a midseason injury replacement.

Detroit already has Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Ryan Broyles and Mike Thomas on its roster.

Monfils advances

HOUSTON

Gael Monfils of France had 15 aces and beat John Blake of the United States 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the first round of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships.

Blake, once ranked No. 4, played his 51st match at River Oaks Country Club where he is a crowd favorite but Monfils won cheers for his hustle playing his first match in the city.

Monfils, who played in only 10 tournaments last year because of a knee injury, matched the sixth-highest total of aces in the tournament. He will next face top-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain.
