Two candidates in race for Struthers auditor

2 seek auditor’s job in Struthers
City and Democratic Party officials said two candidates are vying for the city’s auditor position.
David Betras, Mahoning County Democratic Party chairman, said residents Christina Bohl and Sondra Smith are the only two people competing for the job.
Bohl, who is serving as the interim auditor, has been the city’s deputy auditor for 12 years and a city employee for 17 years.
Betras said he did not have any information about Smith’s credentials.
Former auditor Tina Morell announced her departure last month before submitting a letter of resignation to Mayor Terry Stocker and Betras.
Stocker said Morell had done a fine job as an auditor. He said Morell took the city’s budget carryover from $42,000 in 2004 to $400,000 in 2012. Her four-year term was to expire Dec. 31, 2015.
Betras said 15 members from the party’s central committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the council chambers to select the new auditor. He said each candidate will be able to give a speech to the committee on why they should be the city’s next auditor.
“We’re looking for someone dedicated to public service and provide the taxpayers good and honest service,” said Betras.
Betras said the committee will choose the auditor that night, and then the person is sworn in by a judge. He said the candidate can then begin working the following day.
Betras said the elected position is a four-year term, and the selected auditor will have to run for election in 2015 to retain the position.
