Shelter dogs get a day out at Boardman Park today

Published: Sat, April 6, 2013 @ 8:23 p.m.

BOARDMAN

With tails wagging and tongues hanging, the dogs from AnimalCharity Humane Society seemed to be enjoying their day out.

And so were the people holding the leashes.

The dogs and volunteers were at Boardman Park for the organization’s semi-annual “Dog’s Day Out.”

“It’s a nice day for them,” said Jason Cooke, vice president. “It’s a big stress-

reliever. They love it.”

Started 21⁄2 ago, the event is meant to get the animals waiting for adoption out of the kennel and into the park for the better part of a day while volunteers and staff members clean, sanitize and reorganize Animal Charity’s facility on Market Street.

Five dogs were brought to the park for the event Saturday, and about 15 people helped out.

The organization has up to 30 dogs at times, Cooke said. Currently, they house six. One dog remained at the shelter because it is new to the organization and is a little skittish.

Not only is the event a stress-reliever for the dogs, but it gets them noticed, Cooke said.

“You’d be surprised how many people walk by and they see the dog and they say, ‘Oh, is the dog up for adoption?’ So it works out good sometimes,” he said.

Sammy Sorice of Canfield recently began volunteering at Animal Charity.

“I just love animals and thought it was a great

opportunity to get involved with them and have fun,” the 15-year-old said.

At the shelter he walks and plays with the dogs. He also helps out with the cats waiting for adoption.

Sorice has three dogs and a cat of his own.

He brought his mother, Melanie Sorice, along to help walk dogs Saturday.
