Report: YSU close to hiring GB’s Barnes

Published: Fri, April 5, 2013 @ 12:08 a.m.

Staff report

Youngstown State may get a new women’s basketball coach today. A new conference rival appears to be on the way, too.

Green Bay associate head coach John Barnes was in contract negotiations to replace Bob Boldon, according to WKBN.

Also, multiple outlets are reporting that Oakland (Mich.) will soon join the Horizon League, while Illinois-Chicago will leave for the Missouri Valley Conference. The MVC is also meeting with Loyola and Valparaiso after losing Creighton to the Big East, according to reports.

Oakland has been repeatedly linked to the Horizon League since Butler left following the 2011-12 season. The Golden Grizzlies, who lost to YSU in the first round of the CIT, are members of the Summit League, formerly the Mid-Continent Conference. YSU competed in the Mid-Con from 1992-2001.

According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, the Horizon is also considering adding Missouri-Kansas City and Denver. UMKC also competes in the Summit while Denver plans to join the league this fall.

YSU athletic director Ron Strollo did not respond to a request for comment.

Barnes spent one season with the Phoenix, following head coach Kevin Borseth when he came from the University of Michigan to Green Bay. Previously, Barnes served as an assistant at the University of Wisconsin.

Barnes was the head coach at Michigan Tech from 2003-10, going 156-55 while leading the Huskies to the NCAA Division II tournament five times.

I believe Oakland would need a waiver on seating capacity at its facility to get into the Horizon AND Detroit would have to cast a vote in favor. The latter isn't very likely.
Losing UIC, Loyola, AND Valpo would be a devastating blow to the Horizon. I see no advantage in spreading the league's "horizon" as far west as Denver. The UMKC program has long been awful.
I'd like to see the Horizon steal Robert Morris and maybe Northern Kentucky for starters. Keep the league fairly compact and add programs that are as competitive as the teams which are or may be leaving.
