Two children killed in I-76 collision, parents injured

YOUNGSTOWN

Two children have died and two people are in critical condition after what has been deemed a horrific accident on Interstate 76 this morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling east on the interstate shortly before 8 a.m. crossed the median and went into the path of a semi truck headed west on the interstate. The vehicles collided and three people in the Chevrolet were ejected from the vehicle.

There were two adults in the front seat of the Chevrolet and two children, ages 9 and 2, in the back seat of the vehicle. Reports are that neither of the kids in the back seat were wearing seat belts.

Troopers said both children were killed in the accident and both parents are in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

“There were three people ejected from the truck. Two were taken to the hospital and two have died,” said a dispatcher for the patrol. “We know that the two in the front seat were taken to the hospital and the two in the rear seat were killed.”

Troopers have been with the survivors trying to ascertain what led to the tragic accident.

State patrol investigators are not sure where the people in the Chevrolet were coming from at the time of the accident. Troopers said the plates on the Chevrolet are from Georgia.

I-76 westbound just west of SR 534 is NOW OPEN.

When will a wire guard rail be installed in the median, like the one that goes the length of Portage county on I-76? While not fool proof, they do help to prevent vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic.

There was part of a car seat in the road, think the little one, maybe 2 yrs old was in it. The other one could have been 9, but looked more like 7 or so. Horrible accident!! Worse I ever seen!! We did CPR on the little one, but couldn't bring her back. So tragic. :( RIP little angels!

Ang - I was about 20 or 30 cars back westbound when traffic started to back up around 7:50 a.m. I had just gone by the exit at 534 westbound when traffic suddenly halted. It was probably only seconds since the accident happened.

I didn't know it was that bad until the emergency vehicles started to arrive. After two ambulances and two fire trucks (that I saw, there may have been more) went by, plus numerous OSHP cars (7 or 8, I lost count), I knew it must have been very serious.

My heart goes out to the driver of the semi truck and the family whose children were killed. They are in my thoughts and prayers.
