Staff report

The world premiere of “Below the Surface,” a play by Canton playwright Craig R. May, will open Friday and run for three weekends at Victorian Players Theater.

Set in the 1950s in an upscale home, “Below the Surface” will take the audience on a ride of mystery and intrigue.

It begins when Richard Latimer visits his friend Clarissa at her home to tell her some of her poems have been included in a publication.

The celebration abruptly ends, however, with the appearance of Clarissa’s parents and her sister, Lydia. Dark, family secrets emerge, which explain the dark nature of Clarissa’s poetry. Personalities collide, and a murder takes place as the audience sees the true nature of the family.

Playing Richard and Clarissa are Tom Kusiowski and Dawnelle Jewell. Others in the cast are C. Richard Haldi, Linda McGrath, Brandy Hughes and Ryan Newell. J.E.Ballantyne Jr. is directing.

“Below the Surface” was done as a staged reading several years ago, but the Victorian production will be the first fully staged production.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. The Victorian Players Theater is at 702 Mahoning Ave. Tickets are $10 ($8 for seniors and students).
